Special Presentation

Manuel, a famous stage director, is preparing his next show, a musical about making a musical show. He seeks the help of Sara, a renowned choreographer and ex-wife, to help him cast and direct. During the casting process, the young dancer Ines will appear as the new rising star. She will bring her father into the story, a dubious character who has dangerous dealings with the local mob. As preparation for the show evolves, the desire to win will push the dancers to excel, which will bring out passion and tension between them. With powerful Mexican music setting the tone (Lila Downs, Carlos Rivera, Fela Dominguez), a play will emerge in which tragedy, fiction, and reality all intertwine. Directed by legendary Spanish director Carlos Saura, with cinematography by master Vittorio Storaro.

The screening of this feature film will be followed by a screening of two new short films, both also directed by Carlos Saura:

Rosa Rosae

Saura creates and recovers more than thirty images, drawings and photographs that he prints, manipulates, plays with and subsequently films, to produce a story which, while recreating the Spanish Civil War, could also reflect the horrors of universal conflict, seen through the eyes of a child and his surroundings. Running time: 6 minutes.

Goya

Carlos Saura “repaints” (in cinematic language) Francisco de Goya’s canvas ‘On May 3 in Madrid’, also known as ‘The executions’, one of the most powerful statements that a painter has made against war. Running Time: 14 minutes.
